I went the casting route so ended up buying the shield of bastion and maxed each damage skill and just stood back firing away while the mob was rooted.

Health sigils are more important. I personally have 1500 health sigils and 500 energy sigils.

Staffs do not help you in battle while the pendant does. Items that actually help you in battle should always be a priority.
