Re: Auto -- Training - Leveling – Mining

This probably shouldn't be stubbed since it may be going away after the update. I knew these techniques would certainly be off putting to some but I'm kind of middle of the road on this one. I wrote the guide as a way to let people know what it is etc... An Expose so to speak;) so that they can make up their own mind on it's use. Other MMO's have certainly had troubles with Farming and some have been money making opportunities. WOW has had it's share of gold and item mining. Check this wired article out if you are interested --> http://www.wired.com/gaming/virtualworlds/magazine/16-12/ff_ige

From a recent post on another thread Shaggadelic actually mirrors my opinion of the matter:

The way I see it is, if a player has found a means to take advantage of the way the game works, then you are within your rights to do so... Ideally, if it is something that is a bug or something that would lead to a serious game imbalance, you should report it as such - and then you can continue to take advantage until the programmers fix it. That is the honest thing to do...

That being said, AFK farming is currently a viable way to make money, but it won't be after the update so enjoy it while you can. Personally I don't do it, but that is just because I don't like leaving my phone on all night, and I much prefer earning my keep the old fashioned way.. It is a feeling of accomplishment! (And I have earned lots of gold, you just gotta kill smart, and look for four stars :D )

Yes raven I kind of gathered that you shared my views on this matter... I have no problem with ppl taking advantage of everything available to them, and it puts pressure on the developers to fix bugs/exploits quickly if they don't want them in there! :D

On a side note, if you happen to see an afk farmer and are a lower level player, you can use them to your advantage by using them as a human shield, or getting them to weaken enemies before you go for the kill... I plan on using the next few i see to help me level up my druid! Of course the farmers will probably start to complain about kill stealing if this happened a lot, but turnabout is fair play in my book ;)

I agree that topics like this puts pressure on the developers to fix problems, but this isn't the best way to do it.
For the time being, it's still exploiting the system...
They already knew about the problem, but it's not like they can simply send out a fix, especially this close to a new build release.
With the next build, they should be able to send out patches in a more timely fashion, so things like this can be fixed faster.

Fair enough Scrambles, you (and others) view this behaviour as cheating while Raven and I view it with indifference (I would also point out that I have never intentionally left my char logged in to afk farm) but at the end of the day - if ppl CAN do it, they WILL do it, and there isn't a thing that anyone can do to stop them, short of the admins patching the problem.

While I was thinking about how an active player could use the afkers to their advantage, I also thought of a way to actually prevent people from afk farming...

If you have a reasonably high level player who can run through the crypt and drag around a huge mob with them, you might be able to finish your run on top of the farmer and then log out... This could conceivably switch their aggro over to the farmer and if they were overwhelmed they may die. Problem solved, other than have a slew of player corpses lying around  This would only really work in a place where the enemies are tough enough to actually hurt the farmer though...

I have not tested either my human shield method or my bait and switch approach yet, and there aren't that many afk farmers on my server yet (more each day though) so if anyone wants to try either approach, I would love to see how they work.

In the long run, it might be a good idea for the developers to make it so players and enemies and npcs are not able to run through one another (solid) and could essentially push each other around areas if they ran into each other. Then people could simply herd an afk farmer out of the spawn points and it would also get rid of the unsightly stacks of enemies that often occur when fighting huge mobs!

I understand your indifferent point of view, as players can and do take advantage of known issues such as this.
I just personally don't understand the ways they are attempting to legitimize their abuse of the system.
ie. Those who are saying that it's the only way they are able to get enough gold to make their purchases.

I consider it a grey area. It's questionable activity.
It's nowhere near as bad as the xp bug, but it still offsets the gameplay.

Another reason I posted this was so that anyone who was aware of it could take advantage of this or know that others are. I have spoken with several folks and most admit to doing skill training to increase their weapon stats. I admit I did the same thing but it was becuase of my not knowing I needed the staff skill for my druid until after I reached level 30. I hate that people use if for gold because to me it is so much easier to make money in the catacombs by killing 4 stars and it seems a bit lazy. Personally I would rather them do this than beg me or click-trade me all the time. The personal reprehensible behavior is far worse than gaming the system this way.

All in all I'm glad that they will be putting in a time out. I guess there will be more beggars :o And for any druid who forgets to buy the staff training book after you reach lvl 30.....Delete your character and start over.....Your doomed

I understand that you want the topic to have more light shed on it, but this seems more like a guide on how to "cheat" than it does on just making people aware of the issue.
(cheat being in quotations because it is debatable).

I can only hope that this too has a solution on the way. I find this more annoying than afk farming.

This made me chuckle! Not doomed, but it is def much harder to catch back up after that high of a level.
