As far as recruiting goes, every clan has their own thing. Some are by level and some are by application on these message boards. I dont know how every other clan runs so i cant say which is best for you.
The clan system is hardly dead. With the new update there are new bosses which are very difficult and require people from various clans to defeat. I agree with the one drop person rule as opposed to characters. I myself pretty much only play on one toon as others do and it would be disheartening to join boss fights at a disadvantage. Although, i have all gems and lets say a purp gem drops and someone has an alt rogue in group, they can have it.
Also, item prices are relative to rarity and effort. If It takes 5+ people to kill a boss and they each blow 2k in idols and restos for an item, its going to cost more.
