I'm not entirely sure what you mean - an asterisk on the item's name in the game? Or somewhere in the description?
Asterisks around a part of the description is usually used for emphasis - as in *Yuletide 2014*, to signify that it's special.

It's an item with a star shape on it.
Any chance you can share a screenshot? Or the name of the item?

Ah yes, that could be it
Frank - you can favorite items by tapping on them and hitting the Favorite checkbox, and that will add that little gold star, and allow you to equip the item to a skill slot,
