with the hand to hand DPS mage, you can still hit the enemy twice (with ice shards and fire bolt - the two most powerful hits) before he attacks you

I'd still always start with an ice shards and a firebolt as you can hit the enemy with both before they run to you, then start slashing with your spellsword (until your shards and firebolt are ready to go again)

spellsword has a level requirement of 110 from memory
